Shanghai Institute of Health Sciences (SIHS) is one of the first “National Model Professional Universities”. It is an important base for training healthcare professionals and is regarded as an advanced institution of vocational education in Shanghai.
The predecessor of SIHS was Shanghai Second Medical University Health Technical College, which was founded in 1999. In September 2005, with the approval of Shanghai Municipal Government, Shanghai Institute of Health Sciences was established and was directly affiliated to Shanghai Municipal Education Commission.
Based on the philosophy of “Medical technology-oriented comprehensive development with quality as priority and skill as basis”, and the fine education tradition and culture of “pursuing high quality healthcare with diligence and excellence” inherited from Shanghai Second Medical University, the Institute’s main mission is “To base in Shanghai, to serve the whole nation and to join in international competition”. The Institute is trying to demonstrate its unique features in vocational education and become a pioneer among the domestic professional universities of healthcare education so as to play an active role in the mission of constructing Shanghai into a city providing first class medical care services in Asia

The new campus of Shanghai Institute of Health Sciences was put into use in September 2006, which is located in Shanghai International Medical Zone in Zhoupu of Nanhui District (279 Zhouzhu Highway). Capable of accommodating over 4000 students, SIHS covers an area of 64 acres with the floor space of over 110,000 square meters including 40,000 square meters of students’ dormitory and 20,000 square meters of indoor and outdoor sports sites. The Institute is equipped with modern and high quality facilities sponsored by National Ministry of Treasury and Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, including Shanghai Modern Nursing Training Center, Shanghai Modern Medical Laboratory Science Training Center, Shanghai Dental Technology Training Center, Shanghai Modern Optometry Training Center, and Shanghai Modern Pharmacology Training Center, serving as key bases for training healthcare professionals of all kinds. The Institute is also equipped with modern computer laboratories, interactive digital morphological microscope laboratories, multimedia audio-visual rooms, modern auditoriums, one library, a 400-meter round running track surrounding a football field, gyms and courts for basketball, volleyball, tennis and table tennis, and 40000 square meter student apartments, providing a fine modernized living and study environment for students. The campus also adopts a multimedia administration system with intelligentized networks. Faculty and students have access to the on-campus network, which performs as a digital control system of teaching, research and administration and provides safe and highly efficient information services.
Majors & Programs
The Institute closely follows the social economic development and the market demand to set up majors. Presently the Institute consists of five faculties, two departments and two colleges, namely Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Laboratory Science, Faculty of Dental Technology, Faculty of Optometry, Faculty of Pharmacology, Department of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Department of Medical Sciences, International Exchange College and Continuing Education College. It offers a variety of majors including Nursing, Sino-US Joint Nursing Program, Dental Nursing, Midwifery Nursing, Infant Care Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Dental Technology, Sino-Japan Joint Dental Technology Program, Optometry, Radiography, Medical Nutrition (Food & Hygiene), Pharmacology, Marketing (Pharmaceutical Marketing), and Applied Computer Sciences.
With nursing as the key major, the Institute initiated to establish Shanghai Modern Nursing Education Group. United with domestic and overseas institutions training nursing professionals, including schools, hospitals and some relevant social organizations, the Group is aimed at exploring a pattern of collectivized vocational education and formulating a vocational education system integrated with functions of teaching, training and skill appraisal. The Sino-US Joint Nursing Program and the Sino-Japan Joint Dental Technology Program are Chinese-Overseas Collaborative Projects formally approved by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission.
Faculty & Staff
Currently, the Institute has 137 full-time teachers among whom 60.6% have titles of professor or assistant professor. They have made outstanding achievements and received lots of awards including ‘National Model Teacher’, ‘National Female Model Teacher’, and ‘National Celebrated Teacher in Higher Education’. The Faculty of Nursing, which has successfully combined theory learning with clinical practice, is specially awarded the title of ‘National Teaching Team’. The Institute has also employed 58 experts and 50 part-time teachers from industries. 55.4% of all teachers have professional qualifications for clinical practice.
For 26 international projects, 22 foreign teachers on a long term basis from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Japan are working in the Institute, among them there is one academic leader, eight advanced administrative staff, and twelve full time teachers. Besides, the Institute annually sends teachers to countries such as Finland, Holland, Norway, Australia, New Zealand and Japan for academic exchange.

Sino-US Joint Nursing Program: Partnership with Bob Jones University in the United States. The Program adopts the American nursing curriculum taught by American teachers.
Sino-Japan Joint Dental Technology Program: Partnership with Tokai College of Dental Technology in Japan. The program is the only joint international education program in the field of dental medicine in Shanghai.

China-Australia Nursing Research Center: Partnership with Australian Catholic University National Nursing Research Center for joint nursing research projects
China-Netherlands Community Health Training Center: Partnership with ROC Westerschelde for joint community health care training. This project is approved by China National Ministry of Commerce and Holland National Ministry of Economics.
n Another 20 exchange programs with other overseas universities
The Institute selects and sponsors excellent students to participate in short-term exchange programs in overseas partner universities and hospitals in Norway, France, Finland, Holland and New Zealand. Each year there are over 10 students sent for overseas exchange on a one month or one semester basis so as to broaden their view, develop their ability for international exchange and accumulate their experience in international clinical settings. The students will be awarded transferable credits for their exchange and study abroad. Furthermore, the Institute also accepts exchange students from Finland, Norway, Holland, Australia, New Zeal and Japan for long-term or short-term study and clinical practice.
The Institute has established long-term collaborative relations with teaching hospitals affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine as its main clinical practicum bases, including Ruijin Hospital, Renji Hospital, Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Third People’s Hospital, and Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital as well as other general or specialist hospitals. The Institute also has practicum bases in healthcare institutions in different districts and communities, universities and research institutes, high-tech bio-medical enterprises, dental clinics, spectacles companies, food safety supervision authorities and food processing manufacturers in Shanghai.
The Institute recruits graduates from senior high schools and secondary vocational schools and provides high quality full-time higher education. Upon graduation, graduates of the Institute will be awarded a National Diploma of Higher Education, and at least one professional qualification certificate, which make them more competitive in the job market. The Institute has enjoyed a high graduate employment rate of over 98.5% averagely in the past three years. The graduates, regarded as high level healthcare professionals, are popular with employers like hospitals and medical and pharmaceutical enterprises and other healthcare institutions. The American Nursing License Test(NCLEX-RN) pass rate of the Sino-US Joint Nursing Program graduates is the same as that of the American nursing school graduates in the United States.
